Frequently asked questions

You have questions.
Here are honest answers.

Everything we get asked the most. About our programs, our methods, and what to expect when you train with us.

01 / Programs

About the programs

How long does training take? +

It depends on the program. Leash Training runs 5 weeks. Leash + Recall runs 8 to 10 weeks. Board and Train runs 4 to 6 weeks of full immersion.

That said, real, lasting results depend on your follow-through at home. The work doesn't stop when the program ends. That is why every program comes with lifetime support.

What programs do you offer? +

Three programs. Each builds on the last.

Leash Training ($1,400, 5 weeks) builds foundation obedience, leash manners, and public confidence. Best for pulling, reactivity, and real-world basics.

Leash + Recall ($2,400, 8 to 10 weeks) includes everything in Leash Training plus reliable off-leash recall using a professionally conditioned e-collar.

Board and Train ($6,000, 4 to 6 weeks) is full immersion. Your dog lives with Maddie and trains every day in real-world environments.

What is the difference between Board and Train and private lessons? +

Private lessons (Leash Training and Leash + Recall) are weekly sessions where Maddie comes to you. You and your dog learn together. The pace is slower but your dog stays home.

Board and Train is full immersion. Your dog lives with Maddie and trains every single day in real-world environments. Faster results, less time commitment from you during the program. But you still need to learn what Maddie taught when your dog comes home, which is what the go-home lesson and four follow-up sessions are for.

Do I need to be involved in the training? +

Yes. Even with Board and Train. Training is not something we do to your dog. It is a system we teach both of you.

For private lessons, you are part of every session. For Board and Train, you stay involved through weekly updates and you do the go-home lesson plus four follow-ups when your dog returns.

If you are looking to drop your dog off and forget about it, this is not the right program for you.

02 / Board and Train

About Board and Train

Does Board and Train actually work? +

Yes. When both sides do their part. We hold up our end. Your dog comes back transformed.

What determines long-term results is whether you maintain the structure at home after your dog returns. The clients who get the best results are the ones who stay consistent after the program ends. That is why the four follow-up sessions exist.

Will my dog forget everything when they come home? +

This is the most common concern and the most common misunderstanding. Dogs do not forget training.

What they need is an owner who maintains the same structure and communication at home. That is exactly what the go-home lesson and four follow-up sessions are for. The skills transfer when you do the work too.

What does a typical day look like during Board and Train? +

Your dog does not sit in a kennel waiting to train. They live in Maddie's home and train throughout the day in real-world environments.

Mornings are structured routine. Place commands, threshold work, calm exits. Mid-day is real-world training in parks, neighborhoods, and high-distraction environments. Afternoons are public access work in stores, restaurants, and busy sidewalks. Evenings are household integration with calm down-stays and structured rest.

How much does Board and Train cost? +

$6,000. That includes 4 to 6 weeks of daily training, all training tools, a go-home private lesson, four follow-up in-home sessions, lifetime support, and exclusive boarding rights.

Payment plans are available. We split it 2 x $3,000 (Wk1 and Wk3) and require a $400 deposit to hold your spot. Third-party financing through Affirm, Klarna, and Afterpay is also available.

03 / Methods

About our training methods

What is balanced training? +

Balanced training uses both reward and accountability to teach a dog what is expected of them. We use food, praise, and play to mark and reinforce the right behavior. We use leash pressure, prong collars, and e-collars to provide clear, fair accountability when needed.

The goal is not to bribe a dog into doing what we want. The goal is to give them clarity. Dogs that understand what is expected become calmer, more confident, and more reliable. That is why this approach works in the real world, not just in a controlled training room.

Do you use e-collars? +

Yes, in the Leash + Recall and Board and Train programs. An e-collar used correctly is a communication tool, not a punishment device.

We use professional-grade equipment (Dogtra systems) and condition your dog to understand the stimulation at the lowest effective level before it is ever part of training. Your dog does not associate it with pain. They associate it with clear direction.

The result is a dog that responds reliably in high-distraction environments where treats have zero influence.

Are prong collars and e-collars safe? +

When used correctly, yes. We use properly fitted Herm Sprenger prong collars and Dogtra e-collar systems. Both are designed to provide clear communication without causing harm.

The misuse of these tools is what creates problems. Used by a trained professional with proper conditioning, they are some of the most humane and effective tools available because they give dogs clarity. Confused dogs become anxious dogs. Clear dogs become confident dogs.

Why don't you use treats only? +

Treats work in low-distraction settings. They lose influence the moment your dog sees a squirrel, another dog, or hits a full sprint.

If treats alone worked, you would not be on this page. We use treats and rewards constantly in our training. We just do not pretend they are enough on their own to build a reliable, real-world dog.

04 / Results

About results

Can my dog actually change? +

Yes. Most behavior issues come from a lack of structure, clarity, or accountability. Once those are addressed, dogs often improve faster than people expect.

That is also why we believe so strongly in evaluations. We meet your dog, hear what is going on, and give you a clear, honest answer about what is realistic.

What if my dog has been through training before and it didn't work? +

Most previous training fails because it happens in controlled environments with treats and does not hold up with real-world distractions.

Our programs train in the real world from day one, using clear communication and structured accountability. If your dog listens at home but falls apart outside, that is exactly the problem this approach is designed to fix.

Do you guarantee results? +

No. Anyone who guarantees behavior change is lying.

We can guarantee what we will do. Maddie will hold up her end completely. We use proven methods and we have the track record to back it up. What we cannot guarantee is what happens after your dog comes home, because that depends on your follow-through.

What we will tell you is the truth about your dog at the evaluation. If we do not think we are the right fit, we will say so.

05 / Getting started

Getting started

How do I get started? +

Book a consultation. Click here to book. Pick a park evaluation ($100) or in-home evaluation ($150). Your evaluation fee is credited toward any program if you move forward.

The evaluation is about an hour. We meet your dog, hear what is going on, and build a plan. No pressure. No commitment. Just answers.

What areas do you serve? +

We serve Greenville County, Spartanburg County, and Charlotte, NC and surrounding areas. We come to you for private lessons. Board and Train clients drop off at Maddie's home.

Outside this list? Reach out anyway. We regularly travel for clients in nearby areas.

Do you take all dogs? +

Most dogs, yes. We work with all breeds, sizes, ages, and most behavior issues including pulling, reactivity, recall, anxiety, and household manners.

We do not currently take dogs with serious bite history or severe aggression. We also do not offer scentwork, agility, or service dog certification. If we are not the right fit, we will tell you at the evaluation and point you toward someone who is.
